The academic session of 2008-09 began with two outstanding developments for NYSS Institute of Management & Research - One, that the institute had received the coveted Accreditation from the National Board of Accreditation, New Delhi, and two, that the AICTE had approved an increase in the institute's intake capacity. So, instead of the earlier 60 students, the new batch would have 120!
Meanwhile, the Third Semster students came in bubbling with excitement and were eager to share their experiences during the Student Internship Programme (SIP).
The institute also got a new and dynamic director in Dr. T.Rangarajan, who is a B.Tech. from IIT, Madras, and a Fellow of the prestigious IIM, Ahmedabad. Several valuable additions were also made to the faculty.

Talk on Global Energy Scenario (Jan 3, 2008)
Picking up the string of Guest Lectures in the new academic session, the institute invited Amsterdam-based Mr Asheesh Sastry, Project Manager, Booz Allen Hamilton, for an interaction with the students.
Mr Sastry, who belongs to Nagpur, is a Chemical Engineer and a Management graduate from INSEAD, France. He gave the students an insight into their career as managers and what approach to take while choosing and managing their careers.
As an expert in the field, he also shed light on the global energy scenario and the future of the energy sector. He spoke about his role as a Strategy Consultant and the projects he has undertaken.
His wife, Kavita, an engineer with Shell Corp., accompanied Mr Sastry. She too interacted with the students and encouraged the girl students to have self-belief and be dedicated towards their careers. |

Visit to Enestee Engineering Pvt. Ltd. (Jan 6, 2008)
Thirty-seven students of the First Semester undertook a field visit at Enestee Engineering Pvt. Ltd., a home-grown ISO-certified company that takes up turn-key projects for mineral processing plants.
The students interacted with Esestee Director, Mr Sandeep Nair, who educated them about the nuances of undertaking turn-key projects. He took them around the plant and answered questions related to finance, marketing and HR. He also explained them details of the ISO certification process.
He said his company would tie-up with NYSS IMR for students to train and undertake short-term projects.

Our own 20TWENTY Cricket (Jan 14-16, 2008)
With Mahendra Singh Dhoni's young daredevils having conquered the world with their 20-Twenty super antics, the students of NYSS IMR were bubbling with enthusiasm to have a go at the new format themselves.
Four teams - two from the juniors and two from the seniors - were in the fray for the coveted championship. The atmosphere was great. There were cheerleaders too, though, not as well-dressed as those in South Africa. Eventually, it was the senior team that took the juniors to the cleaners and won the trophy.

Case Analysis Workshop (Jan 22, 2008)
Case Study method continues to be a focus area for NYSS IMR. Who best to conduct a workshop on case analysis than an acclaimed expert from the industry who also has a long association with the academia.
On hand was Mr S K Agrawal, Chairman of Anbro Polymers Pvt. Ltd., and Management Strategist at Blackstone group of Industries, USA. He is also a guest faculty at the University of Buffalo, Priceton University (both USA), IIM Calcutta and Indore and IIT New Delhi.
He explained to the students the finer points of studying a case and the various techniques required for a proper and meaningful analysis. The students have demanded a repeat interaction with Mr Agrawal. |

Preparing for Banking Sector (Jan 23, 2008)
With the Banking and Finance sector looking up and hundreds of thousands of jobs likely to be created here in the near future, there are opportunities galore for MBA students.
NYSS IMR invited Mr S D Bargir, Joint Director of the Indian Institute of Banking & Finance, Mumbai, to explain to the students exactly how best to add value to the MBA degree if they wish to enter this sector.
He advised them to go in for value-added courses like the Diploma in Banking and Finance run by the IIBF. |

Industry Institute Interaction (Jan 25, 2008)
Keeping up with its practice of interaction with the industry, the institute organised "Karmbhoomi - From Classroom to Shopfloor" a part of the I-4 agenda. The meet brought together training & placement officers and students of all Management institutes in Nagpur face to face with representatives from leading business organisations as well as as industry bodies like Vidarbha Industries Association and Nag Vidarbha Chamber of Commerce.
The meet was organised in collaboration with Bank of Baroda and was inaugurated by the bank's Assistant general Manager, Mr R B Gupta. The technical sessions were conducted by Mr S K Agrawal, Veteran Strategist and Business Analyst, Mr R Ramakrishnan, CEO, aXYKno Caps, and Mr Jayant Chopde, CEO, Infospectrum.
Experts at a panel discussion and open forum with students included Mr R G Gupta, Mr Suresh Rathi, industrialist and ex-Secretary of Vidarbha Industries Association, and Mr P C Bhartia, industrialist and ex-President of Nag Vidarbha Chamber of Commerce.
In the concluding session, Mr Alok Tiwari, Executive Editor of The Hitavada was the chief guest. |

For a Positive Attitude (Jan 29, 2008)
Many a daunting task is achieved and many a tough battle won simply by having a positive attitude. That was the message given to the students at a special session on "Developing a Positive Attitude" conduct by noted soft skills trainer of the region, Mr Arvind Gore.
In a highly interactive session, the trainer emphasised that in order to adopt a positive attitude, one must first be able to identify and isolate his negative traits or tendencies. Then, in a systematic and logical manner, the pros and cons of each such trait and its impact on one's life should be assessed.
The trainer proceeded to enlighten the students on some easy and practicable techniques by which they can make seemingly adverse situations look favourable. Mr Gore gave the students some simple exercises to work on by which they could each assess the negativity or positivity within them. |

Intricacies of the Stock Market (Jan 30, 2008)
With a phenomenal growth of the equity investor base in urban India, the stock markets have increasingly become an object of interest and intrigue. Young MBA students from various Management institutes in Nagpur were given an opportunity to acquaint themselves with the intricacies of the stock market at a seminar addressed by Dr A D Kale, former director of the Bombay Stock Exchange.
Dr. Kale briefed the students on the history, structure and functioning of the BSE. He analysed the reasons for the increase in investments in the Indian market - may it be from FDI, PNs, or through some other means.
He also drew the attention of the audience towards the growth rate of India vis-à-vis China and identified the impact of Export and Import trade on a growing economy like India. He elaborated the pros and cons about the valuation of Rupee vis-à-vis the US Dollar and also related it to the implications on some other economies such as the Philippines. |

SSEZs for Consumer Empowerment (Feb 2, 2008)
Dr John Chelladurai, social thinker and activist and director of India Peace Centre was the speaker at a seminar on consumer empowerment.
Dr John is the initiator of a novel methodology for forming 'Self Sustaining Economic Zones' in the country mainly to empower rural consumer at or near the below poverty line (BPL) level.
Dr John explained to the MBA students the need for empowering poor consumers with means of producing for their own needs. The zones are envisaged with the assistance of a Self Help Groups Federation, whereby the consumers will retain markets though forming their own production units, retail outlets and becoming their consumers.
The speaker referred to studies which said that even BPL people consume over 250 items. If they start producing these at the micro level through micro finance, the rural youth would not have to run to crowded cities for employment, Dr John said.
He invited NYSS' MBA students to be a part of the initiative by sharing their Marketing know-how with the self help groups involved in the initiative. |

Communicative English Classes (Feb 4-11, 2008)
Recognising the importance of fluency in English and assessing the relative weakness of its students in this regard, NYSS IMR conducted a specialised Communicative English training programme for students of both semesters.
Those who had attended the programme in the previous semester had gained immensely and were eager to further improve their language skills. The trainer had been briefed about the specific requirements of the students vis-à-vis their employment and career potential. |

'Swadhin' for Youth Awareness (Feb 15, 2008)
A day after February 14, nearly 500 young Management students demonstrated that there is more to their life than Valentine's Day.
In a youth rally organized by NYSS Institute of Management & Research, Nagpur, MBA students from different institutes under R T M Nagpur University, set out to create public awareness on themes ranging from AIDs to environment protection and child labour to farmers' suicides.
The two-wheeler rally, named "Swadhin" was flagged off by Dr Ved Prakash Mishra, Vice Chancellor, Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences University, and at the culmination of the rally, the participating colleges were given mementos at the hands of Mr Sameer Meghe, Treasurer, Nagar Yuwak Shikshan Sanstha.
Along the route of the rally, the students displayed banners, posters and placards and chanted slogans on the allotted themes which included: No to AIDs, Save Wildlife, Stop Child Labour, Save Trees, Prevent Farmers' Suicides, and Stop Pollution.

The Mega Youth Festival - Spectrum (Feb 16 & 17, 2008)
The annual Mega Youth festival of NYSS Institute of Management & Research was smash hit with students from all Management institutes under R T M Nagpur University participating in a host of academic, co- and extra-curricular events including Debate, Case Study, Ad Making, Sales Promotion, Personality, Singing, Dance, and Fashion Show.
NYSS IMR students successfully brought in sponsorships to cover the expenses of the whole event as well as individual competitions. Live Telecast of Union Budget 08 (Feb 29, 08)
Even as Finance Minister P Chidambaram was spelling out various measures to spruce up the socio-economic situation of the country, nearly a hundred MBA students of NYSS Institute of Management & Research were watching him closely.
Well, as closely as they could on a giant screen. The occasion was the screening and collective watching of the Union Budget 08 being unveiled in the Lok Sabha.
Students were asked to take notes and later discuss some of the salient features of the budget, including the impact of the cuts in various duties and the increase of IT exemption limits.
Students also discussed the impact of the budget on the stock indices as a result of investor and market sentiments being affected by various measures and proposals spelled out by Mr Chidambaram. |

Knowing Oneself (Mar 1, 08)
We always try to figure out other people, but sometimes fail to know who we ourselves really are. That was the theme of a session conducted by well-known personality trainer, Mr Kautilya Chhajed.
In a lively and interactive session, Mr Chhajeb made the students undertake some simple exercises, including the popular 'Dr Phil's Test' and demonstrated how difficult or easy it could be to recognise one's true worth and qualities.
This realisation would be of immense help to the prospective managers because apart from dealing with others, one has to largely deal with oneself in high-pressure situations.

Financial Management in the Power Sector (Mar 8, 08)
It is always a pleasure for the Alma Mater to welcome back one of its products, particularly if her of she has excelled in a chosen field. It was our pride to have Mr Mukesh Menghani of the 2007 batch visit us and deliver a guest lecture.
He is working with Louis Berger as a Project Analyst and has been deputed on a project to the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd. in Mumbai. This assignment has given Mr Menghani a deep insight into the actual financial operations as well as project management procedures and practices in the mammoth public sector organisation.
He shared his experience and knowledge about project management in general and the operations of turn-key projects in particular. |

'Arena' - The Sports Meet (Mar 10-11, 08)
It's definitely not all work at NYSS-IMR. While the table-tennis, chess and carom facilities in the Student Activity centre are mostly being used by students to relax after a brain-sapping day at work, the sports can also be competitive.
And competitive they were. The senior batch was really keen to show that they could come up trumps even in sports, while the junior group was eager to show their 'elders' that they were no wimps.
So, although in letter the events were individual, in spirit they were contested at the batch level. As it happened, the winners in table-tennis and carom tournaments were the seniors, while the juniors excelled at chess. So now you know, who's got the brains and who the brawn, they said. |

Interaction with Under-privileged Children (Mar 11, 08)
As part of the social responsibility initiative of NYSS IMR, a group of its students visited Bal Sadan Orphanage in the city and had a healthy interaction with the inmates for over three hours.
Many of our students too are from humble backgrounds and they shared their experiences, aims and aspirations with the young inmates. The students also discussed future options with regard to academics and career paths and counselled the inmates on which career choices to make, how and why. |

To Hyderbad to learn (Mar 13-15, 08)
Mixing business with pleasure is the in thing in the corporate world and, preparing for this world, our students did just that. Off to the Nizam's City they were for a three day quickie that would find them learning at quarter dozen industries and having fun at Ramoji Film City, Snow World, Golconda Fort and the bustling Charminar Bazaars.
On the learning front, they visited the Scoops Ice Cream factory, the world-class Pragati Printers Pvt. Ltd. and Vinayak Steel Pvt. Ltd.
The industries were as different as chalk and cheese or, in this case, ice cream and steel, and the students got a first hand look at the production, inventory control, shop floor management, man management, job flow, order charts and other vital aspects of management. They interacted with senior officials and workers to know the whole story. |

'Udyogmantra' - Encouraging Entrepreneurship (Mar 27-28, 08)
While there is a lot of excitement about the MIHAN project, everyone is looking only at the promised employment opportunities and not the huge entrepreneurial potential that the project holds, said Mr M D Shivankar, Secretary, Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education, Mumbai.
He was speaking at the inaugural function of 'Udyogmantra', a two-day entrepreneurial development workshop organized by NYSS IMR in collaboration with Maharashtra Centre for Entrepreneurship Development (MCED).
More than 100 MBA students from different Management institutes in the R T M Nagpur University area participated in the workshop.
The experts included function, Mr D V Mulay, Regional Officer, Maharashtra Centre for Entrepreneurship Development (MCED), Mr H R Waghmare, Project Officer, MCED, Mr Jayaji Mohite, consultant and visiting faculty at MCED, Mr J M Sapre, Senior Manager, Canara Bank, Prof Micah M M Aiyub, T & P Officer, NYSS IMR and some local entrepreneurs also shared their experiences and encouraged the students. |

Blood Donation Camp (Mar 28, 08)
It is a regular feature for NYSS IMR to organise blood donation camps wherein staff and students contribute to this humanitarian cause. This time the camp was held in co-operation with Life Line Blood Bank of the city.
More than 40 students, including girls, and half a dozen staff members donated blood at this drive. |

Taking Computer Education to Doorsteps (Mar 30 - , 08))
An interesting new initiative was launched whereby NYSS IMR has teamed up with the Datta Meghe Foundation for Social and Scientific Research, Nagpur.
The foundation has donated a mobile computer van fitted with 10 computers to with the aim of spreading computer literacy free of cost among poor students.
NYSS IMR students accompanied by a technician from the Foundation have started moving around with the van in groups. For periods ranging between two and four days, the van is stationed in a particular location, generally the poorer areas of Nagpur, where anybody can come and attend the orientation lessons.
Instructions are given in basic computer operations and word processing at the initial stage. |

Psychometric Analysis(Mar 31-Apr 3, 08)
Behavioural scientist, Prof A V Kulkarni, retired Head of the Department of Psychology, R T M Nagpur University, who has also officiated at the Head of the Department of Business Management, R T M Nagpur University, was at hand to conduct the psychometric tests on the junior batch of MBA students.
As is the practice with the institute, Prof Kulkarni conducts the tests and provides analyses for the students, giving them an idea of their predominant personality traits and possible strengths and weaknesses.
This data is very useful to the students who are often in a dilemma over picking MBA specializations in the immediate future as well as career paths later. It is also a big help to the faculty members, each of whom subsequently counsels his or her mentees about specializations and career choices. |

Agro Marketing Potential of Vidarbha(Apr 1, 08)
Award-winning journalist and Vidarbha Region Bureau Chief of DNA, Mumbai, Mr Jaideep Hardikar, was invited for a guest lecture on the potential of Vidarbha in the agro-marketing sector.
Mr Hardikar has conducted deep research into this area and his published work has been widely acclaimed by planners as well as agriculturists.
With detailed statistics and other data, he spoke about the current problems facing growers of paddy, oranges and cotton. He said Vidarbha has probably the best water resources in the country, but much of the land is still rainfed.
There is a huge export potential for the famed Nagpur Oranges, but growers need to standardize they products in accordance with international requirements. Similarly, there is vast potential for fisheries in Eastern vidarbha, with has close to 35,000 lakes and ponds created by the erstwhile 'Malgujaars' (landlords) to support paddy cultivation.
He gave the students a list of suggestions and encouraged them to be bold enough to enter the field. |

Extension Activity - Workshop for Ashramshala Teachers (Apr 1-6, 08)
NYSS Institute of Management & Research, in collaboration with Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA), Nagpur Branch, conducted a six-day workshop for Ashramshala teachers from all over Nagpur Division.
The workshop was inaugurated by Mrs Indira Kaur Jain, Additional Divisional Commissioner at the NYSS Institute of Management & Research. Prof S A Deshpande, noted economist and Chairman of IIPA, Nagpur, presided over the function. More than 40 teachers of Class X from seven Integrated Tribal Development Projects in the division participated in the workshop. |

Human Face of Management (Apr 4, 08)
Managers of tomorrow have not just to be good professionals but also good human beings. In fact, being a good human being goes a long way towards making one a successful professional, said Mr Kumar Sathaye, HR expert, former senior manager with Brooke Bond and past District Governor, Rotary International District 3030.
He was delivering a guest lecture on "Human Relations in Management." Citing apt anecdotes and personal experiences, the veteran impressed upon the students the need to be emotionally intelligent.
He proffered the concept of a "Caring Leader" who has the ability to deal "heart to heart" with his colleagues and clients. Whatever the age and era and regardless of how far technology has advanced, the age-old values of honesty, integrity and fairness would always be the pillars of an individuals personal and professional life, he said.
The talk was followed by lively discussion in which students voiced their doubts and dilemmas about professional compulsions versus values and ethics. |

Visit to ADCC at IT Park (Apr 5, 08)
NYSS Institute of Management & Research conducted a field visit to the renowned ADCC Infocad at the fast growing IT Park in Nagpur.
The students were explained the intricate computerized operations of the firm which includes sophisticated digitalization of maps and graphs. The students were also told about the Human Resouce practices, the Marketing techniques and the Financial Management procedures employed by the company. |

MDP for Newspaper Executives (Apr 7-8, 08)
In keeping with the industry-institute interaction initiative, NYSS IMR organized a two-day Management Development Programme (MDP) for sales and marketing executives of Sakal Newspapers Ltd., a Pune-based mass media organization.
Six sessions were held over the two days covering topics ranging from communication and negotiation skills to self-belief and time management. The experts included Prof Q H Jeevaji, former Head, Dept of Business Management, Nagpur University, veteran journalist Mr Raju Joshi, HR Trainer Prof K R Khamborkar, Advertising Guru Mr Sanjay Arora, Behavioural Scientist Dr A V Kulkarni and NYSS IMR lecturer Mr Moiz Mannan Haque. |

'Gaurav' - Honouring the Achievers(Apr 7-8, 08)
It was a proud day for NYSS IMR to honour its young achievers as well as felicitate some associates who've achieved high positions.
The chief guest for the annual prize distribution function was Mr Vijay Phanshikar, Editor, The Hitavada, while the President of Vidarbha Industries Association, Mr Mohan Agrawal, presided over the function.
NYSS IMR was of its students to have bagged the top two merit positions among all MBA students of R T M Nagpur University in the Winter Examination of 2007. Achievers in sports, cultural and other co-curricular activities were also honoured at the hands of the guests.
A special part of the function was the felicitation of Dr Tapan Chakrabarti, a visiting faculty at NYSS IMR for his appointment as Director, NEERI, and Mr O.P.Miglani, a member of the Academic Advisory Body of NYSS IMR for his elevation as Director (Personnel), Western Coalfields Ltd. |

Orientation for H.R. Teachers (Aug 13, 08)
Human Resource Development teachers from all reputed Management Institutes of the region attended an Orientation Programme organized recently at NYSS Institute of Management & Research.
The R T M Nagpur University has introduced a new syllabus this term for the Master in Business Administration (MBA) course. While the orientation programme focused on discussing the new syllabus, the faculty also presented their views on modalities of its delivery.
Presiding over the open session, Director of NYSS-IMR, Dr T.Rangarajan, appealed to the teachers to stress on the practical dimensions and shift their delivery modes more towards the case method and project-based learning.
The open session was followed by a talk on "HR from the Heart" by renowned HR practitioner and academician, Mr S D Bhave. |

Exhibition of Management Books (Aug 13, 08)
An exhibition of the latest books dealing with a variety of Management subjects was organized recently at NYSS Institute of Management & Research.
The institute, which has recently won the prestigious accreditation of the National Board of Accreditation (NBA), New Delhi, is a pioneer in its efforts to enrich the libraries of Management institutes in the region.
Faculty members from all the reputed Management Institutes of the region were invited to the exhibition which featured the latest titles and editions in HR Management, Financial Management, Marketing Management, IT Management, Banking and Finance, International Business, Organisational Behaviour, Entrepreneurship Development, Environmental Management, General Management, apart from motivational books, classics and novels. |

Bank Manager to B-School Director (Apr 14, 08)
A guest lecture was organized featuring Dr. Kalyani Rangarajan who, from her personal experience, spoke on the theme: "From Bank Manager to Director of a B-School".
Dr. Kalyani Rangarajan is the Director of MBA Program in PES School of Management, Bangalore. After completing her M.Sc, she has done her PGDM from IIM Ahmedabad. In an informal talk with the students, she narrated instances from her life and how various ups and downs served to inspire her towards greater achievements. She also spoke about the importance of support systems and guided the students on maintaining a balance between personal and professional life.
Dr. Rangarajan has earlier served as a Manager with the State Bank of Mysore. She became one among the youngest Bank Managers at the age of 26 years. Her husband was into academics and that is what enthused her to get into education.

Approaching an Interview (Aug 23, 08)
The Third Semester students are now preparing to enter into their first placement season. One of the major concerns is successfully facing job interviews.
Noted trainer and personality analyst, Shilpa Agrawal, was on hand to help them do this. She had the students fill out a 48-point questionnaire which dealt mainly with different aspects of their personality. She also gave the students valuable tips on body language, dressing sense and the overall approach to a job interview. She also offered advise on how to answer some common interview questions like "Describe yourself" and "Who are you?"
